Marma points in Ayurvedic practice are referring to the junctures in the human body where muscles, veins, ligaments, bones or joints intersect. They are also thought of of the points where the three life forces – collectively referred to as the dosha – reside. These life forces are what determines a person’s constitution, and which gives him his body condition (prakriti).
Point based-therapies, such as acupuncture, acupressure and reflexology, are believed to have been derived from Ayurvedic marma points. In Ayurvedic massages, clockwise and anti-clockwise movements are used to ‘unclog’ energies blocked in the joints, which restores the dosha and allows them to flow naturally throughout the body.
